Infinite potential, infinite possibility
This is the year for you to become who you were always meant to be.
Every year around this time I choose a word that I hope will represent the year to come. In 2024 my word was connection and I chose it because, I’ll be honest, at the time I felt a little lonely. Over the past few years my friendship circle has shrunk dramatically - partly by choice, partly through natural drift - and the fact that I was working solo in a structure that no one around me understood only compounded the feelings of isolation.
In many ways last year was all about connection; through showing up online and sharing my story I met literally thousands of new people. But I also spent much of 2024 head down and alone, saying no to events and parties and dinners so I could say yes to growing my readership and creating a portfolio of products and services. Upon reflection, a more accurate word for last year would probably have been build.
I’ve been noodling on my 2025 word for a while and after toying with growth, scale and strength, I’ve finally landed on expand.
This year, my intention is to expand my knowledge and share ideas that have not yet seen the light of day. It’s to expand this Substack (just a smidge) beyond portfolio careers, and write words that help you go boldly into the world and create a new life filled with pride. It’s to expand the vision for my own future too, because I know that anything is possible as long as I’m willing to put in the work. To become the writer, thinker, business builder, creator and leader that I know I’ve always been but haven’t yet fully become.
This is the year for you to expand, too. Your confidence. Your income. Your beliefs. Your perspective.
This is the year for you to reject the structures, systems and norms you’ve been living by for most, if not all, of your life. The ones that have, by design, kept you exactly where you are. The ones that, when conformed to, leave you looking good from the outside but feeling empty within.
This is the year for you to find your voice. To say no when you mean no. To stand in your truth and not let the fear of other peoples’ opinions take you off a path that you know deep down is right. To whisper, then speak, then shout, then bellow.
This is the year for you to move. To take the steps that you have been so desperately wanting to but haven’t, because your mind has been clenched around a paralysing need for control.
This is the year for you to unclench. To release the need to know for sure and instead have faith that by committing to tiny actions, your dreams will emerge from the mist as something crisp. Something tangible. Something so real that you can reach out and grab it with your hands.
This is the year for you to look up. To see the glittering sky sequinned with stars and recognise the infinite possibility that exists across space and time. To realise that you and me and we and everyone who has been and everyone who will be is also made of stardust, and that the same infinite possibility exists within us too.
This is the year for you to touch the edges of your potential. To meet the moment and expand into the person you were always meant to be. To push yourself. To move through fear. To the best of your ability.
To infinity and beyond.

Great word! Expand. Using that. Stealing? Borrowing.
How apropos, I got my nails done last wknd in this exact color of the pic and said- "It reminds me of the galaxy" and thought, this feels like the stars are at my fingertips and toes. :). My word for this year is Discipline with a bonus support word of Determination. Your post resonates perfectly with my mindset this year. I just turned 40 and I can't believe this is middle-aged. I feel like I'm still growing up, just getting started. Like I've finally arrived.
Looking forward to change as I've truly realized is our only constant. "To infinity and beyond" indeed.
