To the year that passed, to the weeks that were.
To the readers who read and to those who spent.
To my raving fans and the one time stans.
To those who helped me break free, up and through.
Thank you.
To the ones who felt inspired and finally took their first step.
To those who shared while doing it scared.
To those who showed up and courageously knuckled down.
And to those who held on tightly yet found the courage to let go.
Thank yourself.
To us, for looking in the mirror willing to see what was there.
To us, for having our own backs while finding our way.
To us, for building something new while tearing down the old.
To small steps and big ambition.
To getting lost and being found.
To standing tall. To being proud.
To knowing the best is yet to come.
The best of 2024…
If you’re looking for some light holiday reading, here are the top 10 editions of my ‘stack this year. Enjoy!
My first ever piece about portfolio careers and some musings about how, at age 35, I’ve landed in the middle of the money, creativity, freedom and purpose Venn diagram. A good read if you’re looking for some inspiration to kick off 2025!
A detailed rundown of my first year on Substack including the steps I took to change my growth trajectory from completely flat (it took 8 months to reach my first 1000 subs) to exponential (it took 31 days to go from 2000 to 3000).
My learn-do-teach framework for moving through fear and putting yourself out there online. This is how I share my lessons, experiences, ideas and knowledge in a way that feels authentic and not ego-driven.
It’s possible to manage your time and energy across multiple projects without getting burnt out, but first you need to figure out what your ideal schedule and working rhythm looks like (from both a time and energy POV). This is how I did just that.
It might be tempting to try and bake all slices of your portfolio pie at once, but the truth is that a thriving and diversified portfolio career won’t happen overnight. It’s the byproduct of countless experiments, tests, failures, strategic moves, bold calls, nuclear decisions and brazen acts of courage over an extended period of time.
There are two ways to think about building anything in life, whether it be your (portfolio) career, business, personal brand, product or service, writing habit, creative muscle or anything else. You can take the planned, methodical approach of an Architect or the unplanned, exploratory approach of an Archaeologist.
This piece shares my definition of a portfolio career: one that has several part-time jobs or multiple income streams rather than one full-time gig. It’s also a career that involves pursuing multiple passions, interests and types of work, and it’s never static and always evolving.
If you want to make moves towards a portfolio career in 2025, this piece might help you figure out what’s important and what you should focus on first (hint: it’s probably not what you think).
My annual recap sharing every step I took to build out my offering to include done-for-you (startup consulting and fractional work), done-with-you (advisory and mentoring), and do-it-yourself (the Portfolio Career Operating System).
An overview of five profiles - the True Specialist, General Specialist, Special Generalist, True Generalist and Multi-Hyphenate - and my working thesis for how you can define and communicate the value of each.
